More light

Posted in Boat, LED, Posts by Edvin on Feb 3rd, 2011

Installed a 30 degree 1 W LED above the table in cabin. The light temperature of this lamp is really good, warm white without any green tendencies. Despite the size of the lamp (about 40 mm in diameter ) I managed to squeeze in a micro switch. I connected it to the same dimmer circuit as the main 3x1W LEDS.

Next up was the motor compartment; two 1,2W Waterproof LED battens were installed and connected to a timer relay so that when the light is turned on it goes out after 10 minutes, that way I don’t have to worry about not remembering to turn the lights off and exhaust the battery bank. I am very pleased with the result and the fact that i won’t have to fiddle about with a torch in my mouth the next time the engine doesn’t work in the dark.

Light Strip

Posted in Boat, LED, Posts by Edvin on Jan 31st, 2011

I was planning on installing the LED strip over the white laminated bulkheads but it turned out to be a bad idea because the LEDs were too close to the bulkheads and I wasn´t able to get an even spread. After experimenting with different positions I found that the best place for the strip was above the nav-table and kitchen. But i didnt know how to mount the strip so I went to the hardwareshop and found an aluminum profile that fit the strip perfectly.

Im very plesed with the result, a powerful dimmable light which reaches both battery compartment and the switch panel.

Downlight

Posted in Boat, LED, Posts by Edvin on Jan 29th, 2011

Great day today ! The package from LEDbutiken.se came with the mail. I went straight to the boat after work to begin the installation.

I started by taking the 3×1 W downlight apart to see if I could fit a sub miniature powerswich in there.

It looked like it could work so the next step was to cut away material from the inner housing of the lamp so the switch would fit.

Than i soldered the plus wire to the switch.

The lamps will be connected with a 350mW dimmer controlled by a 100kohm pot.

I was really impressed with the light in the lamps the colortemp is great and the light output is incredible. Once the two lamps were up I could easily disconnect my 150W hologen spotlight that i had been using as worklight. Its a good thing the light will be connected to a dimmer because i suspect they will be running on about 30% intensety under normal circomstance but its really good to be able to have a lot of light when needed.

Snow

Posted in LED on Jan 8th, 2011

Sneaked away from work to finish the last few wires for the lights. Nearly 30 cm of snow had fallen during the night and the boat was completly covered.
Last winter I ripped out the whole electrical system and reinstalled it by the book, i used tinned cable throughout the whole system, but the new plan has a new budget which forces me to use ordinary copper wire. So I compensate with plenty of vaseline on the connections, also the untinnes cable Hallberg-Rassy installed 30 years ago still looks like new.

Ceiling

Posted in Boat, LED on Jan 8th, 2011

I took the inner ceiling down last fall to install  a grab rail on deck. Since the original PVC dressing had become brownish gray from burning kerosine in the stove I had bought paint to paint them white.

Repainting may not be on the top of the list right now but i didn´t feel right putting the ceiling back up without painting them.

So I went down to the firm and threw the plates on a couple of  cases and began to paint. The paint is a leather paint from LC lab and worked surprisingly well, its drawn into the PVC and dyes it at depth. Recommended!

While the paint dried, I went back to the boat to start pulling cable for the LED lights.

After three coats the ceiling was ready to reinstall.

I was happy with the result, looks like a new ceiling and the boat feels much brighter !

Sponsor

Posted in LED on Jan 8th, 2011

We got our first sponsor! Ledbutiken.se , really great since I have followed the LED market for a long time both as a boatowner and lighting technician.  Finally there are products which have pleasant light temperatures combined with sufficient light output.

After a long conversation with Hans who runs LB, we arrived at a lighting solution that feels really good!

Two 120-degree 3×1 W downlight for general illumination and 3 x 1W 45 degree downlights as spot lighting over a kitchen, table and chart table.

Also an LED strip on the white formica bulkheads

there are also some plans for emergancy lighting in the engine room and bildge.
