Press Release

August 29, 2012

‘A Passage Through Ice’ Sailing Expedition has just completed the crossing of the infamous M’Clure strait in the Canadian Arctic to become the first sailboat ever to achieve this feat. The international expedition team consisting of Edvin Buregren, Nicolas Peissel and Morgan Peissel have spent the last three months at sea on a 31 foot boat sailing from Newfoundland Canada to Greenland, through the Canadian Arctic to track the depleting polar ice cap and bring awareness to climate change.

“The Arctic is melting at an alarming rate and is clear proof of our disharmony with the planet. By sailing this newly opened route we hope that our expedition will play a small part in bringing further attention to climate change and contributing to a larger shift in attitudes. Our approach to sail across a historical stretch of water that has traditionally been frozen is meant to be a clear visual example of the extent of declining polar ice.”

We will continue to track the polar ice cap towards the Bering strait where we will head into the Pacific Ocean to complete the most Northern Northwest passage ever accomplished by a sailboat.

Congratulations on a momentous achievement, the circumstances of the sea ice facilitated it. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that you had the skills and equipment to take the opportunity.

Well done, and best wishes for a safe conclusion to your journey.

Congratulations on your progress thus far. Be wary though, as there is significant sea ice west of Banks Island and a lee shore to be blown on to. Do not count victory yet as you still need to make it past Point Barrow, through the Bering Sea and Pacific still and the season is very late. A true complete NW Passage trip means a voyage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, not to minimize your efforts thus far. Good luck!

Hello Nicolas and crew, this is David Thoreson from Ocean Watch (NWP 07, 09). Have been following your progress. Knew you would make it. Congratulations on your achievement. Arctic ice just hit all-time record low so you will have much to report on with your climate evidence. Very, very proud of you all and look forward to catching up down the path. Be very careful running out of there along that Alaskan coast. Cheers!

Don’t you think it strange that Canada Ice Service did not also provide video of Captain David Scott Cowper aboard POLAR BOUND ahead of BELZEBUB? Or was the video “clipped”? Maybe he was to far ahead that they didn’t even fly that far to the west of Banks Island.

Bottom line – U.K. Captain David Scott Cowper, age 70, navigating solo aboard M/V POLAR BOUND make the first transit of the original Northwest Passage discovered in 1851 by Captain Robert McClure aboard HMS INVESTIGATOR while searching for the lost Franklin Expedition.

BELZEBUB followed POLAR BOUND through the ice choked-points since POLAR BOUND was first on the west side of Banks Island when BELZEBUB was still behind to the east at Banks Island.

First sailboat? Sure thing. Congratulations on making it through safe and sound.

Thank you David for taking your time and skill to help a fellow mariner while on your record setting fifth(?) Solo Northwest Passage while attempting your sixth(?) world circumnavigation. I imagine you might be thinking about setting another record with a Solo Polar Circumnavigation home via the Northern Route over Russia to the U.K.?

    GOD SPEED ALL MARINERS HOME!

    Doug

The Scott Polar Research Institute ´Transits of the Northwest Passage´ lists the first boat ever to complete a Northwest Passage via the mcClure as the Kaptain Khlebnikov Russian icebreaker in 2001. Also our sailing directions for the Arctic published by the government of Canada clearly indicate that other ice breakers and ice strengthened motor vessels have passed MClure but did not complete a Northwest Passage. On a more recent note on August 29th 2012 David Cowper became the first non commercial motor vessel through this route and Belzebub the first sailboat through McClure in history.

Also we would like to note that on our sailboat Belzebub that we have no way of faking official government aerial video as accused, although we wish we had a private ice services reconnaisance plane.

Just going to say it because I’m sure a lot of people are thinking it … who the fcuk is douggie douche bag pohl and who pissed in his metamucil? I’ve seen his asinine comments plastered over a lot of the articles written about this expedition ….do you really have nothing else to do? Also have you attempted this passage? And why do you have such a hard on for Cowper?

As all the articles have stated its the first SAILBOAT to pass that way. If you’ve got nothing nice to say then shut up or go troll some other sites. I’m sure there’s a science fair somewhere where you could explain to the kids that they’re not the first people to explain the power of electricity….

So, it turns out Belzebub was 1/2 day behind Polar Bond to Cape Prince Alfred and the evidence is clear. HF triangulations and CIS Aircraft Film. Nevertheless
they managed to be there and we still don’t know their fate. Too many people were ill informed with hastily arranged reports. Some other organizations require proof of SPOT recording or similar documents while this time we have an
avalanche of misinformation. Have a good luck.

Amazing guys! So proud of you all… Now get home safe and sound so we can have a good ol’ chin wag over some brew. PS – Hoping Doug (the stalker) has finally laid off after Jimi ripped him a new one. I think it’s just a classic situation of the green eyed monster, we all wish we could have accomplished something like this and sometimes that brings the worst in people. PPS – I’m pretty handy with Photoshop, so if you indeed need to fake some official government vids, I’m your girl. ;) Well done boys!

Um. Roald Amundson’s voyage was accomplished on a sailboat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maud_%28ship%29).

Sorry folks. There is nothing unique about what these “boys” have done.
